Singapore Mathematics

EduKateSG conducts Kazakhstan Mathematic classes and provides materials developed using Singapore PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination Syllabus), IGCSE and IB Mathematics Syllabus as our base, and builds upon eduKateSG’s three basic tenets of cognitive development in Mathematics:

  1. proficiency in calculations

  2. heuristic engagement of both the left and right brain

  3. problem solving and simplification of mathematical algorithms

We strive to aim top scores in IGCSE and IB Examinations, by teaching students to understand and attempt solving mathematical concepts, to motivate students to develop a love for the subject, and most importantly, to enjoy an education that contributes to the empowerment and personal development of the individual student.

Why eduKateSG’s Methodology?

Our speciality in teaching is to engage both hemispheres of the brain, converting abstract Mathematical problems not only to logical/sequenced/computational concepts for the left brain but visual/intuitive understanding using the right brain as well. This is our specially developed “eduKateSG’s Methodology”. It engages students to explore the lateralization of brain function and promotes a far superior cognitive and bilateral brain usage when a student grows accustomed to our methodology. Engaging both sides of the brain engages innovation, creativity, but applies a structure of logical deduction for both sides of the brain to flourish. EduKateSG’s methodology creates this platform for students to achieve that.

Mathematics for Kazakhstan

The PSLE, a brief introduction into its concepts and achievements.

PSLE Mathematics have been used in Singapore since its inception in 1960. With constant revisions to keep the syllabus relevant, and continuous acceleration for its Mathematics programme to become world class, Singapore Math have been used by countries like USA, Canada, UK and Israel. By the 1980’s, Singapore Math was developed by the Ministry of Education using their own textbooks.

The Primary focus of Singapore Mathematics are Problem Solving and Heuristic Model Drawing. It also promotes simplification of complex abstract Mathematical processes into smaller blocks where students can easily digest, master and manipulate sums in their attempt of the national PSLE examinations for Grade 6. These textbooks have gone on to be acclaimed by Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS) showing Singapore to be top of the world three times for Mathematics Grade 4-8.

Singapore Mathematics also streamlines itself into lesser topics but in greater depth and focus. This is based on the thinking that the process of learning requires mastery instead of coverage. It takes into consideration that a systematic logical approach of acquiring skills and its mastery equips students with a holistic education. Once students understand the motion of acquiring a high level of mastery from the basics is based on the process of building an efficient structure of studying skills, this learning process can be replicated in other fields on the students’ own time. Students starts from the simplest and grows in confidence during PSLE’s learning process. Empowering students to learn independently are part of the skills required to do well in the PSLE.

The Ideas

Idea 1

Singapore Mathematics concepts are based on a learn-it-once-and-move-on concept. Teachers for every grade assumes the students have achieved proficiency in their previous grades and continue with their next level with no replication. They also assume that students are capable and self-studying from a young age.

Idea 2

Simplify everything and use technology to cover the rest. This does not mean the curriculum is easy. It means that in every problem we encounter, we need to simplify the process to be able to understand the aims and directions that we need to take. The curriculum requires students to Understand, Visualize, Conceptualize, Streamline and Memorize. In a complex sum, students simplify the steps into digestible understandable concepts. Tackle it step by step until we acquire the answer. This leads us to an efficient thought process and create the foundations to acquiring a highly evolved set of studying skills.

Idea 3

The need for a highly evolved set of studying skills is the reason why Singapore Mathematics are taught with a smaller curriculum but a deeper set of understanding. The idea that the spine of a good set of studying skill is based upon the cyclic completion and mastery of a topic. With consistent repetitive learning cycles, the student will develop a keen sense of understanding and completing the steps of studying effectively. PSLE Mathematics requires students to attempt difficult problem sums in small logical steps. It positions students to start small and systematically acquire higher skills to master the topics. At the end of the road, students attempt the national PSLE examinations to be promoted to Secondary School.

Singapore Mathematics on the World Stage.

In July and August 2015, Singapore Mathematics won gold in International Young Physicists Tournament (IYPT) as well as the International Olympiads for Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Informatics and Physics.

In 2012, Singapore Grade 4 students are ranked the best in the world (TIMMS) for Mathematics and second in Science. At Grade 8, Singapore students are ranked second for Mathematics and first for Science.

Vocabulary List for PSLE 100 Top Words for Occupation

PSLE Boot Camp. Online free lessons by eduKate SG. Here is the next set of notes for PSLE Intensive Class Free Online Course Singapore. For part 1, click here.

This is an online series of classes for primary school students to prepare for their PSLE by eduKate SG. It is a set of checklists of English knowledge that students should know and use during the PSLE Examinations. Kindly find out the meanings to the following:

Occupations

In a composition, it is necessary to give details for characters to take on a personality and describing occupations will be a good starting point to paint the nature of a person.

For example, “Jane takes care of animals and works in an animal clinic.” can be changed to,” Jane is a veterinarian who is kind and benevolent to animals.”

Notice that the first sentence has 11 words, but the second has 12 words but is more efficient in the delivery of multiple concepts of who Jane is? This allows students to synthesise their sentence structure and add on other information to increase their content. It makes the sentence fuller and richer in detail without being too draggy.

Graphs Axis, Stationary Points and Asymtotes

GCE O-level and GCE A-Level Mathematics. IGCSE. IB Diploma HL SL Mathematics.
Some common features of a graph.
Axial Intercepts
  • also known as y-intercepts and x-intercepts (roots of an equation)
  • this occurs at x=0 for y-intercepts, and y=0 for x intercepts
  • substitute the above into equation of curve for the intercepts
Stationary points
  • gradient, m, dy/dx=0
  • tangent lines at stationary points are parallel to the x-axis (horizontal)
  • stationary points can be minimum/maximum/inflexion
Asymptotes
  • an asymptote is a line that values of x or y tend towards when reaching infinity ∞
  • there are 3 types of asymtotes: horizontal, vertical and oblique
  • when y tends to infinity and x tends to a number, a vertical asymptote occurs
  • when x tends to infinity and y tends to a number a horizontal asymptote occurs
  • an oblique asymptote occurs when f(x)/g(x) where f(x) is one degree higher than g(x)

Awesome PSLE English Education

Our best female tutors from RJC/SAJC/TPJC/ACJC conducts good English PSLE Classes for Primary 1,2,3,4,5,6 English Language in Singapore .

This is an article on what we think about why we all should acquire an awesome command of the English Language.

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”
― Oscar Wilde

The joy of living takes on a different meaning with the mastering of the English Language. See the world, talk to people from all walks of life. Communicate. Socialise. It is all possible with a universal language. And we only have to learn it once. It stays with you for life. Like cycling or swimming.

Especially in Singapore, where citizens of the world visits, it is such a waste that we cannot leverage on this without commanding a universal language like English. Every opportunity awaits us, carpe diem.

“A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.”
― Mahatma Gandhi

Funny thing as we learn a new language. Our world suddenly gets larger and more inclusive. An alien suddenly becomes a friend. A book becomes food for the soul, and an outlet to another world. Literature defines us. Poetry elevates us. Movies entertains us. It is us becoming more than what we were. The higher the mastery, the deeper our understanding of the language, the culture, and the people. The more vocabulary we have, the more we can express ourselves, perceive accurately, and aspire to be.

Emerging countries around Asia is another advantage we can leverage the English Language on. What is the chance that we need another language when we visit those country when we converse in English? Being pragmatic, we have used English to converse when we go tour another country. Korea, Japan, Philippines, Hong Kong, etc. We can try to learn bits and pieces of their local language, but more often than not, its back to English that we survive the trip.  We can learn their language of course, and that makes the trip so much more interesting. But there is no need to. Which makes English useful.

“The trouble is if you don’t spend your life yourself, other people spend it for you.”
― Peter Shaffer

That is the thing with language too. Learning a language is not just liberating, it is empowering. What we know about English is that we can get somewhere in life with it. Whether it is career, relationships, going places, or even ordering your favourite food, it takes a language to achieve our aims, our needs, and our dreams. We spend our lives looking for something special to define ourselves, and oh how we would have missed it without the mastery of English.

So here we have arrived, and here we have become. I once had an English teacher, who said, “if we hear, does it mean we have listened.” That is such a good reason for us to master a language. I read Animal Farm when I was in Primary 5, and to me, it was just a story about Animals trying to run a farm. My cousins had a good laugh making me explain to them what the story was about. I had to re-do it in Secondary 2 as a Literature text. Guess what, the same book meant totally different concepts at different stages of my life. That is language, a word may never mean the same thing. It is a mercurial thing, changing, evolving, adapting and living, like us.

“Remember, remember, this is now, and now, and now. Live it, feel it, cling to it. I want to become acutely aware of all I’ve taken for granted.”
― Sylvia Plath
